The Humane Society of Wicomico County is an open admission shelter located 30 minutes from the beautiful resort town of Ocean City Maryland. We are looking for a full-time veterinarian to join our team. We have a very busy hospital clinic where we do all in-house animals and outside surgery for the public. Most surgery is general spay neuters, but often we do have the opportunity to help the public with more extensive surgeries like eye enucleations, C-sections, leg amputations, pyometra, entropion repairs, and mass removals. We will also provide our shelter animals with more extensive procedures and surgeries as needed. All shelter animals are spayed and neutered and given a general vet exam before being adopted. We also provide some follow up on recently adopted animals. Our shelter is currently in the fundraising stages of a new facility. This will be a state-of-the-art 14,000 square foot facility.
Salary would be between $125,000-$150,000 based on experience. We could discuss the ability to be a contracted employee. Pay would be $90 per hour or per animal surgery pay, whichever is greater. This position schedule is Tuesday- Friday and 2 Saturday's a month.
You will be assisted by an amazing vet assistant/tech team and team of trained clinic volunteers.

Perform routine spay/neuter surgeries on both public and shelter animals.

THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of the Test Barn, also known as the Post-race Detention Barn. This includes the collection and processing of blood and urine samples, along with meticulous record-keeping associated with these activities. The Commission Veterinarian will take charge of drawing blood samples and will supervise all personnel working within the Test Barn. Additionally, you will oversee the routine pre-race procedures and documentation for horses that are eligible for treatment with medication for Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage, ensuring compliance with the Rules of Racing. You will be overseeing the activities of private veterinary practitioners involved in administering bleeder medication to qualified horses. You will conduct pre-race inspections for most ship-in horses and ensure accurate records are maintained for this process. Your presence will be required in the paddock and at the finish line during each racing program to monitor horses before, during, and after the races. You will also maintain a Veterinarian's List of horses deemed physically unfit to compete, along with all necessary documentation. In cases where horses exhibit respiratory bleeding, you will perform endoscopic examinations of the upper respiratory system as needed to determine eligibility for the bleeder medication program. If a private veterinary practitioner is unavailable, you will administer emergency treatment. Additionally, you will attend meetings and hearings at the request of the Stewards or Commission and will examine any horses that are "stuck" for veterinary reasons during Scratch Time, as requested by the Stewards. Other related duties may also be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications:
Licensed or the ability to be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California.

• Examine animals to detect and determine the nature of diseases or injuries.
• Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication, setting bones, dressing wounds, performing surgery, or other therapies.
• Inoculate animals against various diseases.
• Collect body tissue, feces, blood, urine, or other body fluids for examination and analysis.
• Perform laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology, and urinalysis.
• Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interpret the resulting images.
• Administer anesthetics, perform surgery, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery with the assistance of the technical team.
• Follow discharge guidelines for hospitalized and post-surgery patients and treatment plan guidelines for clients to ensure proper patient treatment in the home environment, including client follow-up after hospitalization.
• Answer client questions and provide education on various aspects of animal care and treatment. Advise animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, and general care necessary to promote the health of their pets.
• Educate the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.
• Call back/follow up with clients; recommend medical progress visits when appropriate.
• Humanely euthanize animals when it has been mutually agreed upon by the patient’s owner.
• Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and patient records.
• Train and supervise team members who handle and care for animals; as needed.
• Deal with clients and employees in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
• Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively influence the level of care and service provided to the clients and patients of Holistic Veterinary Healing.
• Participate in business development as instructed by management and/or ownership.
• Attend monthly team meetings and other pertinent in-house training.
• Perform other duties assigned.
Salary:
New Graduate $120,000, others commensurate with experience.

We are looking for a friendly associate veterinarian with strong client communication skills. Competent surgery/dental skills are a plus, but we will mentor new grads on their surgical skill and will also consider candidates that do not want to perform surgery.
We offer a fully computerized record system with the capability to access the entire system remotely, allowing charts to be completed and lab results called from out of the office when needed. However, our staff is trained to confer with the doctor on staff when questions arise and work outside of the office is not expected. Our facilities offer in-house blood work capabilities, advanced surgical and anesthetic monitoring equipment, digital radiology, ultrasound, cryotherapy, and cold laser therapy.
We strongly value work-life balance, and our entire team routinely finishes work and leaves for the day by close (6pm Monday-Thursday, 5pm Friday, noon Saturday). After hours emergencies are referred to nearby 24-hour emergency and speciality hospitals.
