Pittsburgh Premier Veterinary Care IS RENOVATING AND EXPANDING!!! Come join our team as we expand our facility, scope of practice, and staff. We are currently a 2-doctor practice with 6 support staff (3 CVT's). We are located in a stand-alone 3-floor building and are currently practicing out of the ground floor as we renovate the 1st floor. Renovations will include 5 exam rooms, surgery suite, dental area, radiology suite (including ultrasound), and an open treatment room concept. The treatment room will have 4 procedure tables, two of which are mobile, heated dental tables. Once renovations are complete the other floors will be "face-lifted", and the ground floor utilized for rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation equipment includes underwater treadmill, dry tread mill, companion animal laser, and therapeutic ultrasound. Currently our appointment book consists of a variety of routine surgical procedures, more advanced soft tissue/abdominal surgical procedures, and dental prophy which utilize our hand-held dental radiograph equipment. In-house lab equipment includes IDEXX Catalyst, Procyte, and Sedivue. IDEXX imaging service is used for our digital radiographs. Portable ultrasound unit available for in hospital use in addition to specialty call-in service echocardiogram and full abdominal ultrasounds. We also offer urgent care type appointments as well as sick and well visits. Patients consist mainly of canines and felines, but some exotic animals are seen at doctors' discretion. Program Description: The intern will assist with preventative herd health and routine care on approximately 300 resident horses boarded at Spy Coast Farm. This will include neonatal examinations and care, lameness evaluations, diagnostic imaging including radiographs and ultrasound, routine dental examinations, castrations, and on call emergency services. The Spy Coast Farm Reproduction Center is managed by Dr. Modesty Burleson. This includes mares, weanlings, yearlings, up through two-year olds, the Stallion Station, and the CEM Quarantine Facility. The farm breeds approximately 50-80 mares/year via artificial insemination with both fresh cooled and frozen semen and foals 40-50 foals/year. The farm offers commercial import quarantine services for mares and stallions for Contagious Equine Metritis and USDA export quarantine services. The intern will assist with testing and treatment protocols on various breeds of imported horses from all over the world. Dr. Julie Vargas oversees the Spy Coast Farm Rehabilitation and Fitness Center and performs all of the sports medicine and lameness diagnostics at the Young Horse Training Center. The rehabilitation facility is a state-of-the-art referral center, where specialized staff, overseen by Dr. Vargas, works with each horse’s primary veterinarian to customize an appropriate rehabilitation program. Rehabilitation cases range from soft tissue injuries to post-surgical layups, fractures, and neurologic cases. Additionally, ship-in services are frequented by yearling sales prep and fitness for competing horses. The intern will gain experience with varying regenerative therapies including stem cells, PRP, Prostride, A2M, and IRAP. The intern will have the opportunity to use therapeutic and treatment modalities including Cold Water Spa, Aqua-Treadmill, dry treadmill, Regenerative Laser Therapy, PEMF, Cold Laser, Equinosis Lameness Locator, and Shockwave therapy. They may also assist with alternative therapies including Acupuncture and Chiropractic treatments. The Spy Coast Farm Equine Education Center is a world class teaching facility built specifically for the equine industry. Our intern will have the opportunity to participate and attend numerous continuing education lectures including AAEP 360 seminars, International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) Modules, University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research programming, and many other equine programs. There are opportunities to participate in research projects in various departments of the farm. Approximately one third of the intern’s time will be spent working with Dr. Modesty Burleson at Burleson Farms, a commercial Thoroughbred breeding and sales facility located in Midway, KY. The farm breeds over 100 mares/year and foals approximately 60 foals/year. The intern will assist with breeding, neonatal care, preventative and routine care, lameness evaluations, radiographs, and emergency services as needed. There will be opportunities to assist at Thoroughbred Sales including Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland Sales.

Salary: $48,000
Qualifications: Applicants must be a graduate from an accredited veterinary degree program, pass the NAVLE exam, and complete a 1-2 week externship with Spy Coast Farm. Applicants must have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle for transportation.
